Hi and welcome back! For the last few weeks, we’ve been checking out various news stories from the world of science. There’s a reason for that. I think it’s hilarious to see how often — and how hugely — science completely devastates fundagelicals’ false claims. Let’s check out one of Read more
Hi, y’all! Welcome back. It being Friday again, let us turn our attention to another 1st-century writer. This time, our subject is Marcus Velleius Paterculus (19 BCE – 31 CE). This Roman historian lived through the wildest years of the early Roman Empire. Thus, he wrote during those critical years Read more
Today, Lord Snow Presides over the many, many facets of our humanity — and the messy DNA that makes us so.
As is our wont each year, we now turn our gaze to the 2021 Annual Report of the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC). These reports — as biased, uneven, and spin-doctored as they always are — are of great importance to anybody keeping tabs on evangelical Christians. They give us a great deal of information. Not only do these reports cover the previous year, but they also give us hints about evangelicals’ strategies for the year(s) ahead. They even reveal the various stresses on evangelical leaders’ minds! So today, let’s check out this year’s report for some basic stats.
About a year ago, we had a good laugh at George Barna and his shrill attempts to sell evangelicals his products through the use of fear and dread. It was a pleasing chaser for the sour scariness of his dystopian world-domination plans. Well, he didn’t learn a thing after evangelicals largely ignored his sales pitches last year. Lately, he’s returned with another attempt to frighten evangelicals into buying his product. Today, we ask why hucksters like George Barna just can’t stop, well, huckstering.
None of us thought Mark Driscoll would learn a thing after losing Mars Hill and Acts 29, the church-planting umbrella group he helped create, back in 2014. And nope, he sure hasn’t.
After I’d read PRRI’s writeup of their survey, I wondered what those Christians were saying about it. So I went looking. Today, I’ll show you what I found — and maybe we’ll figure out why white evangelicals have been silent so far about this survey.
Recently, the Public Religion Research Institute (PRRI) released a huge, absolutely groundbreaking survey of Americans. This survey revealed some eye-opening shifts in how Americans practice Christianity — and how the religion’s demographic makeup has changed in the past 7 years. Today, let me show you this survey, and let’s talk about its major findings.
Today, we’ll see what Livy wrote — or rather, didn’t — about the wild-eyed rock star apocalypse-huckster supposedly stirring things up in Jerusalem.
In the various reactions to this mini-scandal that we’ve seen, possibly the worst hot takes of all come from his political enemies in evangelicalism: the Old Guard, whose members work to make the SBC even more regressive, racist, misogynistic, and cruel than it already is. Indeed, their reaction to Sermongate reveals a seriously misplaced set of priorities. Today, let’s check out their reaction — and see how they destroy their own claims to possessing a superior set of morals and ethics over all other flavors of Christianity.
