Hi and welcome back! Gosh, the spigot of summer just turned off around here. It is FALL, overnight! And at the turn of seasons, a young blogger’s fancy lightly turns to thoughts of SUPER SPECIALS. Enjoy this curated collection of past hits from Roll to Disbelieve.
Change, change, change, but not for Christians.
When I was Christian, one thing I took for granted was my god’s ability to change people. Indeed, we were born again! We were new creations! Hooray Team Jesus! Except not really, actually.
- Jesus Sure Changes People: Douglas Wilson Edition. He was a horrible person before converting to TRUE CHRISTIANITY™. Astonishingly, he remained one afterward.
- And the Kim Davis Edition. Hypocrisy is one of such Christians’ very favorite games.
- What Changed, and What Didn’t. Yes, some things did change after I deconverted. But some surprising things didn’t change.
- No, Virginia, Jesus Doesn’t Magically Change People. A number of hypocrites in the news at the time support my assertion. Also, if Christians ever claim they’ve been delivered of this-and-such shortcoming through their faith in Jesus, watch out. They absolutely still do whatever it is.
- Leopards Don’t Change Their
SpotsStripes. Weirdly, TRUE LEOPARDS™ still sin their lil spots off. - Change You’d Better Believe In. My leaders sold safety to me at the cost of my comfort with change.
Banned Books Week.
And here are books I’ve talked about in the past, in honor of Banned Books Week (September 22-28).

- Media for the Deconverted and Questioning. Books and whatnot that I thought were useful.
- A Totally Useful and Reliable List of Christian Books About Atheism. And now, here’s a list of books that really aren’t at all useful.
- Sandkings. One of our first Book Club reviews: a George R.R. Martin classic science-fiction novella.
- Oh Noes! What Would You DO?!? The difference between speculative fiction like the 1980s fantasy novel Ariel, and the hamfisted emotional manipulation that toxic Christians pull all the time.
- The Love Narrative in The Last Unicorn. Here, the real truth of love occurs in the background of the epic fantasy romance occurring on center stage.
- “I love you,” Buttercup Said. What I learned from this classic tale of true love and high adventure.
And a one-off post with a very weird title
I ran across this post (doing a search you’ll likely figure out immediately) and thought it was one of the weirdest titles I’d ever come up with.
- Yes, Virginia, There Is An Obi-Wan. I won’t describe it. If I had to look at it to remember WTF I was even talking about, then everyone else should too. [2026 note from Cas: I forgot again and had to look. What was I thinking with that one?]

On that note: I don’t substantively change posts after they’re published. “Tidying up” involves adding section headers and tags, cleaning up overly-long sentences and paragraphs, and making the post easier to read. Very occasionally, I take out bits that wandered completely into the weeds (by even my egregious standards). However, if anything substantive changes, then I note that change.
