My voice has been absolutely shot for a couple of days now and I feel awful, so I can’t do a recording for Friday. Instead of just not doing any post, I thought I’d list some past popular posts that newer folks might not have seen yet!
(This post went live on Patreon on 8/23/2024. There’s no audio ‘cast because believe me, we’re both better off without one right now!)
Meet Captain Cassidy:
- The very first post. May 8, 2013. Can you even believe eleven+ years have passed?!? Way back when, new followers liked to start at the very beginning and “catch up,” so to speak. But that was a long, long time ago. With 2400+ posts total published, I can’t blame anyone these days for not doing that! But if you’d like to dabble, here’s your link.
- How I (briefly) became the only pro-choice Pentecostal I knew on the night of my deconversion.
- The cloud has moved: How I almost joined a Waco cult. It wasn’t the one led by David Koresh, no, but it was about 1/4 mile from his compound and ran along shockingly similar lines. This happened right before Koresh’s compound went up in flames.
- Mike Warnke and the Cult of Before Stories. The onetime crown prince of evangelical comedy turns out to be a complete liar and hypocrite. A critical weakness in evangelicalism itself ensured his rise to fame and fortune.
- Clan of the Cave Jesus. My first stab at exploring evangelical tribalism—and exposing its fakery.
- So open-minded his brains fell out. How belief in untrue things can actually limit our capacity for critical thinking.
- The scary superfluity of religion. It would be another two years before Christians came to grips with their decline, but I was already noticing that religious affiliation didn’t add much to most believers’ lives. It’d be years before I connected that observation with Christians’ growing loss of coercive power, but I was making my way there!
- Toxic Christians. Nowadays, I use more sophisticated language like “dysfunctional authoritarians,” but this was another early stab at exploring just what makes right-wing Christians such terrible human beings.
- Operation Pitchfork and a moment of crisis. As it turns out, I wasn’t the only ex-Christian to seriously contemplate Yahweh’s enormous evil—and wonder what I should do about it.
- Captain Cassidy’s Big Ole Huge Deconversion Extimony. Just in case you wondered how I got bagsied by predatory evangelicals and finally got free some 8ish years later, this is basically the explanation. (See also this recent post.)
- PS: Where’d I get my nickname of Captain? From “Invictus” by William Ernest Henley. It matters not how strait the gate,/ How charged with punishments the scroll,/ I am the master of my fate,/ I am the captain of my soul.
I hope you like these posts! As for next time, I’ll hopefully be well recovered in time for Tuesday! Until then, thank you so much for being part of Roll to Disbelieve. 💗💗💗
NEXT UP: Evangelicals are fracturing more and more along political lines And they’re starting to suspect that their infighting miiiiight just be causing issues with recruitment. We’ll check it out next time! See you soon!
Please support my work!
Thanks for reading, and thanks for being part of our community! Here are some ways you can support my work:
- Patreon, of course, for as little as $2 a month! I now write Patreon posts twice a week. They drop on Tuesday and Friday mornings for patrons, then a few days later on the main site, Roll to Disbelieve.
- Paypal, for direct one-time gifts. To do this, go to paypal.com, then go to the personal tab and say you want to send money, then enter captain_cassidy@yahoo.com (that’s an underscore between the words) as the recipient. It won’t show me your personal information, only whatever email you input.
- My Amazon affiliate link, for folks who shop at Amazon. Just follow the link, then do your shopping as normal within that same browser window. This link adds nothing to your Amazon bill, but it does send me a little commission for whatever you spend there.
- And as always, sharing the links to my work and talking about it!
