Finding what unites us

Hi friends!

I’m still struggling with health issues, but I wanted to share something with you that made me smile today. I’m researching a post about evangelists looking for captive audiences, and thought of something a community member said the other day: If someone tried to preach at him on a plane or somewhere he couldn’t just get up and leave from, he’d start a sing-along.

That got me wondering what song would work best. I landed on Green Day’s “Basket Case,” just because it seems like everyone over the age of 30 knows it. Plus, I can probably carry it better than anything else I could suggest.

Of course, I mean “carry it better” only in the loosest possible sense of “people might be able to identify just what song I’m butchering in the first place,” which isn’t always certain when I sing. I once told someone, “I sing like nobody’s listening,” and he said I’ve definitely got that part nailed. Yr Loyal Corr. &c. is not a fantastic singer, is what I mean. But I’m happy to make myself look a little silly to drown out an ego-driven evangelist. It’s for the greater good (the greater good).

Also of course, my preliminary research indicates it wouldn’t be necessary anyway, because airlines seem to be paying more attention to this highly intrusive, disruptive behavior. But just in case, if you need to brush up, here’s “Basket Case” by Green Day.

Other options: “Carry On My Wayward Son” by Kansas.

Or a little “Bohemian Rhapsody” perhaps?

Or even “Don’t Stop Believing”!
